Former Residence of Song Qingling (Soong Ching-ling)

Song Qingling's Former ResidenceSoong Ching-ling (1893-1981), also known as Madame Sun Yat-sen, was the Vice President of the People’s Republic of China. Soong spent most of her time and energy in maternal and pediatric health care, preschool education and other women and children’s issues.

The former residence of Soong Ching-ling locates on the north bank of the scenic Houhai Lake. The residence was once a garden of one of the Qing Dynasty’s princes’ mansions. The courtyard is quiet and exquisite and covers more than 20,000 square meters, with Chinese characteristics and a western villa, trees and plants dating back hundreds of years together with traditional courtyards and pavilions.

Soong Ching-ling moved to this residence in 1963, she worked, studied and lived here for 18 years until she passed away in 1981.

Among the displays are Song Ching-ling’s manuscripts, photos and personal collections. Some parts are not open to public.

  • Transportation: Take bus No.13、701、850、810、111、107、118 and get off at the north of Beihai Park; take subway Line 2 and get off at the Gulou stop.
  • Hours: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM; Appointments should be made in one week advance.
  • Admission: 20RMB; 5RMB for students
