Big Bell Temple

The Big Bell Temple (Dazhong Si) is situated in Beisanhuan Xilu (western section of the North 3rd Ring Road). The temple was first built in 1733 during the reign of Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It houses a giant bell which was transferred from the Temple of Longevity (Wanshou Temple), hence got the name of Big Bell Temple.

The big bell is 6.87 meters high, 3.3 meters in diameter, 0.22 meter thick and weighs 46 tons. The bell is famous not only because of its size, but more importantly because of its tone pure, deep and melodious with a sprightly rhythm which was approved by many music experts.
