Restrictions of the 72-hour Visa-free Transit

  1. 1. The 45 visa-free countries are: 31 European Union countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom), 6 American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, and the United States, and 8 Asian/Oceanian countries: Australia, Brunei, Japan, Qatar, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates.
  2. 2. This regulation does not apply to passengers who travel on a return flight (e.g., Hong Kong – Beijing - Hong Kong). The Beijing stopover must be a transit point between two different cities. Visitors returning to same city as they departed must apply for a visa in the normal way.
  3. 3. The 72-hour visa-free stay only applies to transit via Beijing Capital International Airport. Passengers arriving by train, ship or any other method should apply for a visa in advance of arrival.
  4. 4. Visitors are not permitted to leave Beijing to visit other cities during the 72-hour visa-free period. Departure must be via Beijing from Capital International Airport.
  5. 5. If visitors are unable to depart on time for unavoidable reasons, such as flight cancellation or treatment of sudden disease, should apply for a visa from Municipal Public Security Bureau (PSB). Extensions are not available for the 72 hour transit visa.

72-hour Visa-Free Transit Q&A

  1. 1. When does the 72-hour transit permit start?
  2. The 72 hours time period commences when the visitors get their transit permits, but not the time when they land at the airport.
  3. 2. Can I apply for the 72-hour visa-free stay without an onward ticket purchased in advance of arrival?
  4. An onward air ticket is required to apply for a 72 hour transit visa.
  5. 3. Can I come to Beijing by train and leave Beijing by air within 72 hours?
  6. No. This policy is applicable at Beijing Capital Airport only.
  7. 4. Which cities are running visa-free entry policies in China?
  8. This facility is available at Beijing and Shanghai only. Some cities allow 24-hour visa-free entry policy but visitors are not allowed to leave the transit area.
  9. 5. What should I do if I want to stay longer than 72 hours?
  10. If a stay in Beijing of over 72 hours is required, application is needed for a China visa through Entry-Exit Administration Department of Beijing Municipality Public Security Bureau. It would be advisable to apply for a visa before arrival in China.
